(Kim) In the silence of a calm night in the desert. As we were gazing up and around to behold the vastness & magnificence of the night sky in the dunes, we knew we were lucky to be there. There was no wind. Not a single sound around. Except for our own breaths & heartbeats. Eric’s countdown was a whisper in the dark, but it was so calm he didn’t have to say anything anymore for us to be connected. We were there for hours, creating with our light beneath this river of stars that has been capturing the human imagination forever.
Here’s our first edition with Sloika. We’re extending some of the series with vertical images. These are going to be editions only, and each of them is going to give you one point in our collectors ranking. This one is obviously part of Series #3 (Deep into the night)
About Night Reflection 3.10
(Eric) We created this one in October 2019 during a long road trip. It was a warm night in the sand dunes and after a couple of hours creating long exposure images, I decided to do a last one that would be vertical. I had exactly this visual in mind, but finding the alignment was quite hard as I couldn’t get the Milkyway well aligned between to sand dunes while staying at the right height with the cameras in relation with Kim. Playing in the dunes is a game of going up and down and left and right and up and down and left and right. Meanwhile, the Milkyway keeps shifting and tilting, making this even harder. It took me over an hour and Kim was really patient and solid during this whole time. It took me 38 attempts to get this one. This is the last shot of the night. Never before did I close the night being so confident as I was the one. It was this one.
As with most of my long-exposure work, this is lit by hand with no intentional other sources of light. This means that the trace of light you see around Kim is also what is lighting her up. This one is a 13-seconds exposure where the light-painting accounts for only 2 seconds of the exposure. Once I completed the circle, I ran away to disappear and Kim stays perfectly still for the remaining 11 seconds :)
