Night Reflection 1.3b release (the Long road)

Hard conditions, slippery ground, cold wind and a way too small tide pool!
Little did we know that we would go back to this exact place 10 months later to try to improve this image. We knew we could get better conditions by going earlier in the season and also by having more time in our hands.

This is our first attempt at improving on purpose a very specific image we created in the past. It’s a long road as we’ve been creating with this technique for over seven years, and it’s a long road to go back to Le Bic (6 hours ride from Montréal). But hey, can’t complain when it’s also a camping trip :)

Night Reflection 1.3, created and released in September 2021

September is usually too cold in this area, especially with the wind.

Kim: We are not trying to recreate or replicate something we’ve done in the past. But we are trying to improve ourselves and our art with consistency & practice. As we were getting ready to go create the image to improve Night Reflection 1.3 from our collection, I went back to what I wrote about this image 10 months earlier. It was in perfect alignment with what we were about to do. Here is what I wrote:

Curiosity and play allow the finding of exciting and new things within something we’ve been doing for a while. It usually comes from subtle changes and elements we learned while trying things out, allowing ourselves to make mistakes and messing things up a bit. This is the most recent image created in the Night Reflection collection. As Eric often says: “I feel like we are still at the beginning of this journey”. There is still so much to learn, so much to share and so much to experience.

Going back to the same place, ten months later

The conditions are much better this time and our goal is clear: making the most of this magical location with very specific requirements. Adding these constraints helps to narrow down the endless possibilities but of course, there was this excitement about the idea of improving our previous work. It's warm, not too windy and luck is on our side.

Do we really need to do this? Probably not. But here are my three main motivations:

  1. Making sure that all of our main images (from the Night Reflection series) can be printed in high quality

  2. Challenging myself with clear goals and specific constraints

  3. Revisiting places I love, especially when camping and outdoors time is involved ;)

Just after the sunset… doing location scouting and slowly starting the light-painting session

The final image. The sky cleared up, revealing a few stars and the deep colors of the blue hour

What’s next?

There are a few other ones we want to revisit and I can’t say we’re not already planning a few trips for this purpose ;)

We’re also still making new ones of course, as this is has been a big part of our lives for the past 7 years.
