About this picture

This picture is part of a chapter that represents exceptions in our creative journey. Some were unexpected or fortuitous, almost accidental. Others were creative experiments that we only tried very few times. All of them are unique, rare, and startling: The unexpected verities. All part of our long creative process, they all had an impact on our artistic expression. But as we consider that we are always at the beginning of something, we know we’ll keep exploring, hoping to create other unexpected pieces along the way.

This moment was not a happy accident. The storm was slowly rising from afar at the White Sands and the wind was so strong that we knew we had very little time to create. Eric went back to the camera between 2 series & I asked him to leave the remote trigger with me. I had to at least try to catch lightning. Calm & hyper-focused in the wind for a minute, waiting for the good moment to happen before Eric would come back to create one of our last series…

When it happened I could not be sure it succeeded, until I heard Eric’s voice of surprise when he saw the picture on the back of the camera.

About the Night Reflection Six series

This series is the result of a creative process that has been evolving over the past 8 years. Crafting light by hand to create imagery that magnifies reality in a single exposure is at the core of our projects. These outdoor tube light-painting creations testify to the importance of two things that inspire my photography journey: a love for light-painting as an artistic expression and a love for landscapes that evoke the vastness, mystery, and beauty of nature. Each image is the result of a long exposure during which Kim, a contemporary dancer, and my creative partner, stays still while I move the light behind her. Combining in a singular way light-painting and landscape photography, the process looks like a performance of dancing light and human stillness in the silence of the night.

This chapter regroups nine images that for a reason or another are exceptions in our creative journey.

Just as every trace of light made by hand is unique and impossible to replicate, so is every night sky we capture. As we shape traces of light and partially reveal the beauty of our environment, we try to create a slightly altered perspective of reality where reflection is implied.
