Night Reflection 3.7

About this picture

The Atacama desert is known to be a dream location to see the night sky. And it truly is.

Each location in which we create has its challenges and particularities. Sometimes it’s the mosquitoes, sometimes the strong wind, and so forth. In the Atacama, the cold was most probably our main challenge. We were camping, as sleeping on the location was the most convenient option. But it was probably the longest time we ever shot in cold temperatures. We knew it was a unique opportunity for us to shoot the Milky Way from the southern hemisphere with such a clear sky. We did the best we could. In the morning, everything in the car was frozen. It was the confirmation for us that the cold we were feeling was not just in our heads!

About the Night Reflection Three series

This chapter is especially dear to us as for a long time we simply thought it would be impossible to capture the milky way with our light-painting technique within a single image. As we kept trying and learning, we finally got to a point where we refined our mastery enough to achieve these images. Now an integral part of our art, capturing the night sky and especially our galaxy in our light-painting creations is a good reason to stay out very late at night, looking at something that we are part of, enjoying nature’s spectacle during the Milky Way season. These moments are indeed very humbling and inspiring experiences that we aim to immortalize with our pieces.

Just as every trace of light made by hand is unique and impossible to replicate, so is every night sky we capture. As we shape traces of light and partially reveal the beauty of our environment, we try to create a slightly altered perspective of reality where reflection is implied.

The SOOC image on the back of my camera. Yes, the Milkyway was that bright :)

At the very end of the shooting, with temperature below freezing point :)
