Night Reflection 3.5

About this picture

Witnessing earth’s rotation, capturing the Milky Way’s trajectory in the sky: Time Lapse light-painting.

This is a special piece to us for so many reasons. Stop motion light-painting using blinking light is how we started this light-painting journey. Back then it was in the studio. We’ve come a long way since 2013, and being able to execute the technique outdoors and integrate the Milky Way in the piece is something we are proud of. In a way, it summarizes the learnings we made, many of the skills we developed along the way. This piece is the result of about 35 minutes of performance from both of us.

The video is made of 104 pictures of 20 seconds each, capturing light-painting & the Milky Way. It’s a challenge on many levels. Kim has to remain still the whole time while Eric has to be precise & consistent with his circle's execution. It requires good conditions, presence, deep concentration, and strength.

About the Night Reflection Three series

This chapter is especially dear to us as for a long time we simply thought it would be impossible to capture the milky way with our light-painting technique within a single image. As we kept trying and learning, we finally got to a point where we refined our mastery enough to achieve these images. Now an integral part of our art, capturing the night sky and especially our galaxy in our light-painting creations is a good reason to stay out very late at night, looking at something that we are part of, enjoying nature’s spectacle during the Milky Way season. These moments are indeed very humbling and inspiring experiences that we aim to immortalize with our pieces.

Just as every trace of light made by hand is unique and impossible to replicate, so is every night sky we capture. As we shape traces of light and partially reveal the beauty of our environment, we try to create a slightly altered perspective of reality where reflection is implied.

Test shot at high ISO to figure out the framing

We carefully planed this one and this is one of the last shots we did before starting the super long timelapse

Frame number 10 out of the 104 ones created to make this timelapse

Ready?

It was hard. Very hard. Taking a moment to recover.

The face we made after checking the timelapse on the back of the camera. Oh wow, we got it :::))

Ok let’s pack everything and go back to the camping ground

Companion items

Companion items are mostly gifts (airdrops) for our collectors, but feel free to start trading them on OpenSea.
